It looks like VW is in trouble with the US government for cheating on emissions tests. It's all over the news in the US. Here's a link to a New York Times article about it. Allegedly they had software in the engine comupters of recent diesel models that altered engine behavior when it detected that it was being tested. I have no idea how they managed to get the computer to do that, but apparently they have been doing it for a while as the cars involved range from 2009 to 2015 models, all with their 2.0L diesel engine. 
If this is true VW will be in really hot water.
