I knew it was obviously something stupid on my side. I am a bit embarrassed to admit that but my email addresses for the google account on the dev console and on my phone were different. So I had to add a beta tester with the correct email address. 
and badaboum it worked !!!! Can now see leaderboards and everything.


Please help....
